Exhibition Text: Running from Responsibilities is based off of a piece by Tommy Parker. This piece was made to look like a phone game and the object of the game is to run away from the responsibilities. This is also based of of the mobile game temple run. It kind of has the feel and design of temple run which is what I was going for. While having this it also has the feel of my inspiration by Tommy Parker. I was able to use the color scheme and the environment of a jungle while keeping the theme of running away from your responsibilities,

Inspiration
Exeter-based Tommy works with a wide variety of clients, crafting conceptual illustrations with bold colours and blocks of texture. He’s had the pleasure of working with Wired, Financial Times, GQ, Inc, The Telegraph, Mr Porter, Variety and Fortune, amongst others. Synergy was founded in 2000 by Frances Wallace with a handful of good illustrators from a small studio in Holland Park, West London. Today, we have four members of staff, thirty renowned illustrators and a client list spanning Europe, North America, South America, Australia and Asia. concept is what catches your attention first, though the way it’s drawn matters too. Every one of our illustrators has a unique way of conceptualizing to come up with the remarkable visual ideas I see from them every day. Some illustrators start their creative problem-solving with a list of words when working on an assigned topic; others free associate, and some sketch out their ideas until one of their concepts stands out from the rest.

Many conceptual illustrations rely upon a play on words or a visual pun, others combine two very different subjects we wouldn’t usually think of together.

Temple Run is a 3D endless running video game developed and published by Imangi Studios. The player controls an explorer who has obtained an ancient relic and is running from evil demon monkeys who are chasing him. The game was initially released for iOS devices on August 4, 2011, and later ported to Android systems and Windows Phone 8. In Temple Run, the player controls either Guy Dangerous, an explorer, Scarlett Fox, an escape artist, Barry Bones, a city cop, Karma Lee, the fastest runner in the Far East, Montana Smith, the "second greatest explorer ever"Francisco Montoya, a Spanish conquistador, or Zack Wonder, a football star. The character chosen will embark on an adventure to seek an ancient and valuable golden idol from an Aztec temple.

They will not realize that the temple is inhabited by a family of demonic monkeys who want to devour them. As the game is an endless running game, there is no end to the temple; the player plays until the character collides into a large obstacle, falls into the water or is overtaken by the demon monkeys.

Planning Sketches and Experimentation
This planning sketch is of a person climbing a mountain trying to reach freedom while responsibility follows behind him. I ended up not choosing this drawing cause I really wasnt a fan of this idea and it looked like I could do alot more to the illustration.
|
This planning sketch is of a person holding a 200lbs weight above their head while all different types of responsibilities are going through his head and making him struggle on focusing on the weight on him already. I did like this idea but still thought that I could do a little more and give more detail and meaning behind the piece.
|
The is the sketch for my final piece that I ended up choosing. I knew what I wanted to do after seeing my inspirations so I drew it on the Bristol paper right away. I was happy with hoe this drawing conveyed my message and had a lot of detail and thought put into it.

Process
The first part of the process was to find a piece that I would like to make my artwork based on. I was looking up some artwork that I could use as an inspiration and I stumbled upon this peace by Tommy Parker. I liked the theme behind it and the way that he portrayed it as a game as well with the star and the gems in the corners. I liked how it looked and thought that it looked like temple run. Then I put the two together and made my art piece.
I had to make my illustration pieces on Bristol paper. The Bristol paper that I had bought did not fit the size requirements as it was to large. I had to use an exacto knife seen in this picture to lower the size of the paper so it could be the 19in x 24in required. It was difficult to maintain a straight line while cutting and to make sure it was a clean cut but I was able to do it. |
I then began to draw my piece onto the newly cut Bristol paper as shown by this image. It was hard for me proportion wise and recreating the image on a larger scale. Next time I do something like this I may use a projector to project the image on the paper to make it easier to draw or I could use a grid method to make this easier as well. I was able to make it work by adjusting some of the other things I had drawn on the piece.
|
This is a picture of my final piece. I really liked how i was able to turn it into a game style theme while keeping my message behind it. I was able to incorporate both my inspirations into my piece which is important. I was able to keep the jungle theme of temple run while keeping the colors and the look of the piece by Tommy Parker.

Reflection
Critique
In the end, I am really happy about how my piece turned out. When I started the project I had a little bit of an idea on what I wanted to include but I didn't know how to show that. Then I was doing my research and came upon this piece by Tommy Parker. I saw how his work had a temple run kind of vibe to it so I incorporated that into my piece also.I like how I was able to use colors to make the background look realistic and I like how I was able to make it look like you are playing a game. If I could do it again, I would probably make it look more like a phone cause it could be better.
Compare and Contrast
Similarities
-Forest environment theme
-Game characteristics
-Color scheme and main character
Differences
-responsibilities instead of people
-Phone added to drawing
- Hearts instead of star in corner
