Inspiration
As a significant influence on 20th-century art, Pablo Picasso was an innovative artist who experimented and innovated during his 92-plus years on earth. He was not only a master painter but also a sculptor, printmaker, ceramics artist, etching artist and writer. His work matured from the naturalism of his childhood through Cubism, Surrealism and beyond, shaping the direction of modern and contemporary art through the decades. Picasso lived through two World Wars, sired four children, appeared in films and wrote poetry. He died in 1973. Although he lived the majority of his adult years in France, Picasso was a Spaniard by birth. Hailing from the town of Málaga in Andalusia, Spain, he was the first-born of Don José Ruiz y Blasco and María Picasso y López. He was raised as a Catholic, but in his later life would declare himself an atheist. Pablo Picasso's father was an artist in his own right, earning a living painting birds and other game animals. He also taught art classes and curated the local museum. Don José Ruiz y Blasco began schooling his son in drawing and oil painting when the boy was seven, and he found the young Pablo to be an apt pupil. |
This was an experimentation with the person in the mirror reaching his arm art in the black and white instead of the final piece. I ended up not liking this one because I felt like the message wasn't being conveyed the right way. I felt like the regular colored side should be in the mirror so the person reaching his hand out could be bringing him out of the darkness.
While taking the pictures, I thought about just having my arm and hand in the mirror. It would have been like the hand is reaching from the other side to drag the guy depressed into the lighter side. I didn't really like this idea and felt like I needed to be seen in the picture to emphasize my message more.
These three images are practice photos just to figure out the right placement for me to stand and were to take the pictures. These didn't make it because either my face wasn't fully in the mirror or the camera moved from its spot. It was a lot of trial and error to make sure everything lined up and to make sure everything could be seen in the picture.
The first part of this project was to take the pictures that I would be using in the piece. The picture on the left is the picture that I would be using to put in the mirror. I messed with just putting my hand and arm in the picture but I felt like it looked better and conveyed my meeting better if you could see me in the mirror reaching out to myself.
I then inserted my first picture into GIMP and made it black and white. To do this, I went to image then mode and then clicked gray scale. I chose for this part to be black and white because I felt like it connected more with the emotion of the person with their head down. It had that sad and depressing feeling that I wanted that person to have.
Then I inserted my second picture into GIMP. The only part that I would be using in this piece is the mirror and me in it. I chose to leave this one in color because I wanted the theme to be the person in the mirror to be on the light side trying to reach for the person in the darker side to bring him him into the happier side.
I then used the free select tool to cut out the mirror and adjusted it to go over the mirror that was previously black and white. Taking the pictures in the same location was key in doing this otherwise the mirrors would not have lined up and the angles at which the mirror was would have been wrong.
This is the final piece that I came up with. Before I finalized my piece, I changed the brightness to 20 and the contrast to 10. I was happy with this being my final piece because I felt like it conveyed my message of evolving and getting out of the darkness and sadness and entering a new life. |
